A-Level results again rise @ Coombe Sixth Form in 2017
Results Soar at Coombe Sixth Form as Grades Break Boundaries – Again!
Coombe Sixth Form results soar as students deliver exceptional performances. Relishing the challenge of new and more rigorous examinations for 2017, Coombe Sixth Form students responded with a first-rate performance with 35% achieving A*/A, the highest ever, and almost two thirds of all entries graded A*-B. These are truly amazing results across the board.
Results at A*/A were particularly high, exceeding the national figure by as much as 33%, in art, classical civilisation, design technology, drama, English literature, mathematics, physics, psychology, religious studies and physical education studies. These exceptional grades in a wide range of subjects stem from the broad and balanced curriculum taught in the earlier years at Coombe. The number of students taking modern foreign languages at A Level has remained steady and our linguists have gained above average pass rates in each of French, German and Spanish; a certain legacy of Coombe’s former language specialist school status.
The EPQ results this year were superb with the majority of students gaining an A grade. Throughout the course, students demonstrated resilience, drive and ambition and are duly celebrating these strong results. Emily Barns, Director of Coombe Sixth Form, expressed her pride and delight at these superb outcomes on the Extended Project Qualification, success in which relies on the students’ independent research and analysis skills of an academic topic of their choice and offers the perfect preparation for the demands of university study.
The Level 3 Btec results were once again stunning with 87% of students achieving distinctions or starred distinctions in the triple award (the equivalent of 3 A/A* grades). 100% of students passed the award and all students who intended to progress to further education have achieved the grades to allow them to do so. Students have secured places on high profile courses like pharmacy through this route. We are very proud of the achievements of all the students and feel confident that they have developed the academic and social skills to take full advantage of all opportunities that come their way in the future.
Among our high achievers, notable commendation goes to Anisha Nagaria, a Coombe girl since Year 7, who has achieved a fantastic result of 4 A* grades and has secured a place to study Mathematics at Warwick University. Katie Todd with 3 A*s will study Veterinary Science at Edinburgh University and Amy Young with A*, 2 As and an A for EPQ will study Architecture at Bath University.
Executive Headteacher Mrs Deborah Walls commented, “The level of focus and degree of tenacity displayed by students over the past 2 years has continued to impress me and I hope, such admirable qualities, continue to serve our students well as they embark upon the next chapter of their lives. I was delighted to witness the resilience and powerful ambition displayed by students who adapted seamlessly to recent educational changes, responding with ever-increasing aspirations. I am proud that Coombe Sixth Form continues to deliver an outstanding quality of education and thank all of our students and staff for their commitment and hard work. Our students have been fantastic to work with and are a true asset to the Sixth Form, I wish them all the very best of luck in their future pathways.”
