Coombes Sixth Form

History

A Level History is a fascinating subject which enables students to think critically, confidently challenge historical evidence and reach their own judgement. Over the two years students will immerse themselves in the past by studying The Later Tudors, The Cold War in Europe and Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992. These units give students the opportunity to study both wider thematic studies and depth studies and explore the histories of Britain, USA and Europe over five hundred years. We believe that study at A Level should be broad and allow students to develop knowledge across historical periods and themes that can then be developed through future study. Students will also complete one independent coursework essay as part of the A Level which is independently researched and written with the support of the History department’s staff.

The Department aims to prepare students for study at University through development of wider reading, essay writing and independent research skills. The coursework essay in particularly will be an excellent background into university level research and essay writing. Many of our students go on to study History and related subjects such as Law at prestigious universities including Oxbridge. The department is also very interested in organising enriching experiences that will develop you as a history student. The department regularly organises visits to the National Archives at Kew and university study days. We are also responsible for organising participation in The Cabinet Office’s Cabinet Spending Challenge in Whitehall, which gives students the unique opportunity to take on the role of civil servants for a day, working with recent graduates of the Civil Service Graduate Fast Stream programme. Many of our History students also participate in the sixth form’s debating society and choose to undertake an EPQ research project on a historical subject of their interest.

"I study History, Government and Politics and English at A level and am hopefully going to Sheffield University to study History and Politics next year. I decided to study at Coombe Sixth Form because of the supportive environment and the friendly and inspirational teachers. Coombe offers loads of opportunities during Sixth Form, such as leadership roles and the Extended Project Qualifications - which I would highly recommend."

“In a world of ongoing change, conflict and uncertainty the study of history gives students the tools with which to make sense of our today by studying the past. The study of history allows students to explore the development of societies, the causes and consequence of events that have shaped our world and question interpretations that have been made of the past. History students are valued highly by both universities and employers as students who are able to analyse, research, debate, construct arguments and justify themselves using evidence. The study of history opens the doors to further study in the humanities or to professions such as Law.”
