Coombes Sixth Form

Music

At KS5 we offer A Level Music (Edexcel Board) and it is a popular choice. Pupils develop their performance, composition and analytical skills through the study of twenty pieces across two years, two recitals and two extended compositions.

Music is an exciting subject as it develops both creative and analytical skills. As well as developing the performance skills of pupils (which link well with subject choices such as Drama), Music has connections to subjects such as Physics and Maths as in every piece of music there are formulae and patterns which need to be decoded and then translated into a creative and convincing performance. The same is true of composition and analysis as pupils will develop their skills in understanding musical notation and score reading and then develop a creative original composition. The analysis aspect of music also links well to subjects such as History and English Literature as pupils are taught to understand the meaning of music and they learn how to write convincingly about what they have learnt.

We offer a range of extra curricular activities including Choir, 6th Form kcs Partnership Choir, Band, Orchestra, String Group, Music Technology Club and Music Appreciation Club. Additionally, we work with the Drama Department on an annual production which requires a production band of instrumentalists of grade six standard or above and many singing roles as well.

We offer trips to concerts and an annual music performance tour. This year we are going to the Isle of Wight for the tour and plans are in place for a tour in 2017 to Lake Garda, Italy.

"Music is one of my favourite subjects here at Coombe and will help me to further my ambition of becoming an actress in the future. I currently have a place at Loughborough University to study Drama, after my gap year. I find studying Music really fun as I enjoy composing and performing. I also love being introduced to new composers and music styles in my music analysis lessons."

'Music A-Level at Coombe is a stimulating and interactive subject. Pupils are given the opportunity to develop their musical skills and talents through several avenues, including performing, composing and the appraisal of musical works.

Pupils are exposed to a cultural history, and the subject enhances and develops many life skills that will prove invaluable in the future.  Edexcel have identified the value of music in enhancing transferrable life skills which in turn helps students to ‘respond with confidence to the demands of undergraduate study the world of work.’   The music department at Coombe is dedicated to the subject and hopes to inspire the next generation through our love of music.'
