"Studying Sociology has enabled me to look at the world around me in a different way. The class discussions have been vital to our learning. We have covered political, historical and conceptual ideas on British society. It has given me a good grounding, not only for my examinations but also to study Sociology further at University."

Head of Department; Ms J Lawrence

'Sociology seeks to understand the complex socioeconomic and cultural dynamics that shape individual, community, national and global behaviours. As a field of study it emerged in the 19th century in an effort to identify the underlying dynamics of urban industrialised societies. From this period into the decades following World War II, when Sociology boomed as a field, its areas of enquiry ranged from social control, deviance and crime to the nature of social change, inequality, the economy and religion. Today Sociology furthers research into these areas, but also explores race and ethnicity, sexuality and gender, science and technology as well as culture and art. At Coombe Sociology will teach you to look at the society around you in a brand new way. The subject is a fascinating mix of social history and current trends as well as political and conceptual perspectives on our society.'
