Qualification:  A Level Further Mathematics

Exam Board:  Edexcel

A Level Further Mathematics is a challenging and highly rewarding course for students who enjoy mathematics and want to explore the subject in greater depth. You will study advanced topics such as pure mathematics, mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics, developing sophisticated problem-solving and analytical skills. The course encourages logical thinking, precision and perseverance, making it an excellent choice for students considering degrees and careers in mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, economics and other STEM-related fields.

Course Content

Core Pure Mathematics: Extends knowledge of Quadratic Equations and Trigonometry, while introducing Complex Numbers, Differential Equations, Hyperbolic Functions, Matrices, Vectors and Polar Coordinates.

Further Pure 1: Extends Core Pure Mathematics further and introduces new topics such as Taylor series, Numerical Methods and Conics.

Decision Mathematics: Focuses on the maths involved in algorithms (computer programming), Critical Path Analysis (big projects), Graph Theory, and Linear Programming (maximising profits/minimising costs).

Assessment

• The course is assessed by a series of four equally weighted external examinations at the end of Year 13.

• Each exam lasts 1.5 hours, is worth 75 marks, and accounts for 25% of the overall grade.

Papers 1 & 2: Core Pure Mathematics 1 and Core Pure Mathematics 2

Paper 3: Further Pure 1

Paper 4: Decision Mathematics 1

There is the option of doing more than 4 exams to contribute to your grade. For example, lots of students who take Further Mathematics and Physics opt to sit the Further Mechanics 1 exam. Your grade will then be calculated by Paper 1, Paper 2 followed by your best 2 papers out of the remaining 3.

Entry Requirements

• Students are required to have at least a grade 8 at GCSE Mathematics to study Further Maths.

• It is recommended that you have studied either FSMQ Additional Mathematics or GCSE Further Mathematics.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Senior Maths Challenge

Progression Post 18

  • Specifically noted as an important foundation for Physics and harder, more detailed topics.
  • Suitable for dedicated students looking to build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts for future study.
  • Further Mathematics students often move on to study STEM degree courses, for example Mathematics, Engineering, Physics.

Careers

Further Mathematics is often a stepping stone to a STEM career.

The fascinating topics it covers have links to real world applications including computer programming and project management.
