Qualification: A Level Music

A Level Music is a stimulating and creative course that develops your skills as a performer, composer and listener. You will explore a wide range of musical styles and traditions, analyse set works, refine your performance abilities and create your own original compositions. The course encourages creativity, self-expression and critical listening, while developing discipline, confidence and collaboration. It is an excellent choice for students interested in music, performing arts, composition, music technology, education and a wide range of creative and academic pathways.
• The course involves performing, composing, listening, analysis, and developing musical understanding and techniques .
• It builds upon the three main areas covered at GCSE level: performing, composing, and listening and appraising .
• The technical study is challenging and requires commitment to build up your harmonic repertoire and theory knowledge
Unit 1: Performing - either 25% or 35%. Coursework externally assessed.
Unit 2: Composing - 25% or 35%. Coursework externally assessed.
Unit 3: Appraising - 40% exam at the end of the course
A minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Music and minimum of grade 4/5 (Associated Board or equivalent) on an instrument or voice.
It is also important to be able to read music and have a good understanding of music theory.
If you do not have the standard entry requirements above then you may be able to interview and audition with the Music staff. You would also be asked to roduce a 1.5 minute composition to show us your skills in that area of the course.
• Music is favourably recognised by universities and combines well with all A Level subjects.
• It can be studied at degree level at university or specialist music conservatoires as a discrete subject or as part of a combined degree.

I currently have a place at Loughborough University to study Drama, after my gap year. I find studying Music really fun as I enjoy composing and performing.
