A Level Physicsis a challenging and fascinating course that explores the fundamental principles governing the world around us, from particles and forces to waves, electricity and the wider universe. You will develop your ability to apply mathematical concepts, solve complex problems and carry out practical investigations, while exploring exciting areas such as quantum physics, astrophysics and medical physics. The course develops logical thinking, analytical skills and scientific curiosity, making it an excellent choice for students considering degrees and careers in physics, engineering, medicine, technology, research and other STEM-related fields.
This course deals with observing natural phenomena, profound questions about the nature of the universe, and practical environmental, and technological issues.
The course covers six modules. Modules 2, 3 and 4 are studied in Year 12, then as students progress to modules 5 and 6 in Year 13, the content evolves to utilise more advanced mathematical methods to solve complex problems. Module 1 is continually assessed throughout the course through internally assessed practical tasks (12 in total).

Module 3 - Forces and motion
Module 4 - Electrons, waves and photons
Module 5 - Newtonian world and astrophysics
Module 6 - Particles and medical physics
Assessment is through three externally marked examinations at the end of the course.
Practical activities are embedded within the learning outcomes of the course in the form of the achievement of the Practical Endorsement.
Double Science Students: A minimum combination of a7/6 grades in Combined Science.
Triple Science Students: A minimum combination of a 7 & 6 grade from the three sciences taken, with a minimum of a grade 6 in Physics.
Students must also take A Level Mathematics (and meet its specific entry requirements), as mathematical methods such as logarithms and calculus are heavily used.
Physics provides valuable practical and mathematical skills that form an excellent foundation for university study in scientific, engineering, and mathematical disciplines.
It equips students with highly sought-after transferable skills in areas such as logical reasoning, communication of complex ideas and ICT skills.
Physics drives developments in related areas including chemistry, computing, engineering, materials science, mathematics, medicine and meteorology.
A Level Physics students have recently moved on to degrees in Astrophysics, Materials Science, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Physics.
