A Level Product Design is a creative and practical course that combines innovative design thinking with technical skills and an understanding of materials and manufacturing. You will explore how products are designed, developed and produced, while developing your ability to research, sketch, model, prototype and evaluate your own ideas. The course encourages creativity, problem-solving and independent thinking, making it an excellent choice for students interested in product design, engineering, architecture, manufacturing or a wide range of creative and technical careers.

Course Content

Thi course involves investigating people's everyday needs to initiate design solutions for a high-quality product and evaluating its success.

Students can investigate design problems for individuals, corporate clients, or even developing nations.

Year 12 involves skill-building activities to develop practical, theoretical, and problem-solving abilities.  Students develop an appreciation for the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture, and marketing.

Year 13 included completing the coursework and an increased focus on theory to prepare for the written exams at the end of the year.

Assessment

  • Students must complete a coursework project, which includes producing a coursework design folder and a product prototype.  This coursework is embarked upon in Year 12 and completed in Year 13.
  • Students will sit two written exams at the end of the course.

Entry Requirements

Minimum grade 5 in GCSE Design & Technology alongside general admission requirements.

Progression Post 18

The skills learned during this course help students qualify for a huge range of higher eduction courses.  Students have moved on to take a foundation course at Art College for example or they have studied for degrees in Product Design, Engineering, and Architecture.
